What Are Students Watching Today?
2019 was undoubtedly a year dominated by streaming in the world of TV. There seemed to be an almost symbolic passing of the torch when perhaps the single most-watched traditional TV show Game of Thrones came to an end early in the year. Afterward, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and the newcomer Disney+ offered countless new worlds to get immersed in, and a few old classics to fall back on.
- The Mandalorian: Disney+’s flagship show did not disappoint, offering exciting Star Wars action and adventure on the small screen. Viewers fell in love with “The Child” , better known around the internet as Baby Yoda, and the show was so successful that its merchandise actually outsold that of the recently released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With its initial 8 episode run concluded, fans eagerly await season 2, which has already been greenlit.
- Stranger Things: The Netflix classic is back for round 3 in a season that brings more powers, more creatures, and more Russians for the decidedly 80s-set series. Summer vacation has come and gone, and The Party must assemble once again when The Upside Down threatens Hawkins once again.
- The Office: Who said all the popular shows had to be new? At Doral Academy specifically, it seems like many students turn to The Office as a reliable source of comedy, and using it as a sort of cathartic tool to deal with the stress of school life. Similar shows such as Parks & Recreation are also popular, but if a teacher ever offers to put on some Netflix, you had best believe the first words out of many students’ mouths will be The Office. Followed by the specific season and episode number. And they call me a geek. ”
- “The way The Office was filmed just made it all more realistic and true to life than most shows, you really end up connecting with the characters. The episodes never seem to get old, no matter how many times I’ve watched them.”
All in all, it’s looking ever more likely that the future of TV is on streaming services. With more and more shows coming out as streaming exclusives this year, such as Netflix’s excellent Locke & Key and the aforementioned The Mandalorian Season 2, it looks like these apps are where the most talked-about shows will be. Or maybe traditional TV will make a comeback with some great new shows? Tune in and find out.
