While previous generations have shared their news via television and the radio, Generation Z has adapted to the widespread sharing of information through social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc. A beneficial factor of these platforms is the mere fact that all this information is just a click away. Resources such as live lectures and explanation videos can all be found through these platforms, ensuring these users the opportunity to access quick and updated information. These platforms have the ability to spread information like wildfire, and it is no secret they are also the main hotspot for new trends and creativity; current trends consisting of fall fashion, studying hacks, Halloween costume ideas, and cooking videos. Although what may seem as a harmless trend can have a massive consequence you would have never expected to become a part of.

The Potential Dangers of Mass Media

Even though social media has proven to have all these positive impacts, it is also important to notice that it is still considered to be one of the most dangerous and harmful elements of society today. Social media heavily influences viewers’ actions, and without taking the proper precautions, some users have been susceptible to these tricks and fallen straight into the trap. For instance, the fallacy revolving privacy grows more and more each day, but what most people are oblivious to is that these platforms actually invade each user’s privacy. Oversharing and overpublicizing is the main root of the issue, and it is something that occurs daily, making children and teenagers highly susceptible to matters such as catfishing. Also causing them to be highly targeted by online hackers and predators.

Whilst the debate on the true influence of social media still takes place today, it is clear how significant and consequential it can truly be. Infiltrating our thoughts and exploiting our image is something we can all avoid by taking the proper precautions and being mindful of what we post. It is a matter of finding the proper balance of light-hearted fun, and safety.
