Snubs & Dubs: Award Season
The beginning of the year marks the recognition of the previous year’s best of the best shows, movies, and music. With these awards there is so much to catch up on so here are this year’s award show’s biggest snubs and dubs. Arguably the biggest snub of the year is a controversial one, Taylor Swift winning album of the year. It’s fair to say that Taylor Swift is an iconic artist breaking record after record, however, it is also fair to say that Midnights (2023) is not her best. Why is it called the Eras tour and not the Midnights tour? Compared to There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard by Lana del Rey and The Record by Boy Genius. However, one of the biggest dubs of the night is Victoria Monet winning Best New Artist after writing songs for previous award-winning artists such as Ariana Grande. Another dub was Miley Cyrus finally winning her first Grammy for the song Flowers.
Moving onto the Oscars, one of the largest snubs is Greta Gerwig (Barbie) and Celine Song (Past Lives) not being nominated for best director and Margot Robbie (Barbie) not being nominated for best actress. Outrage sparked as Barbie was critically acclaimed, and also how incredibly ironic many people find that Ryan Gosling was nominated but not Margot or Greta. The Oscars has used this publicity, poking fun at the matter using it for its campaign. The dub for the upcoming Oscars season has to go to Lily Gladstone getting nominated for best leading actress for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon Gladstone’s performance was spectacular and many are hoping she takes the award home. Lastly, at the Golden Globes, the biggest snub of the night in my opinion was Boy and the Heron winning best animated movie against Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse. As someone who loves Studio Ghibli movies, I do have to say that Across the Spiderverse deserved that award on all levels, the story, visuals, sound design, and everything about it was so meticulously crafted and it shows, so it’s fair to say that Ghibli snubbed this one. A dub of the night was The Bear sweeping in the comedy category. The Bear in my opinion isn’t a comedy and in that case, Abbott Elementary should’ve gotten more recognition, but that isn’t to say The Bear doesn’t deserve it. The show has incredible directing and performances from Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebri. The show’s high-quality production and acting are consistent throughout the whole series and it makes sense why it swept the Golden Globes this year. Awards season isn’t over yet as the highly anticipated Oscars are on March 10th so many film fanatics will be sitting down to see what are the real snubs and dubs of that show, as for right now we can only assume what is to come.
