Navigating The AI Takeover
Our increase in technological advances is far from slowing. Within the last decade, the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been at an all-time high. AI has assisted many companies in multiple areas of work. From self-driving cars to logo concepts for upcoming businesses, there’s nothing AI can’t do. AI is beneficial, but it also comes with negative aspects.
The concept of AI began in the 1920s when motion picture films were on the up-rise. Specifically, science-themed films made the idea of artificial intelligence seem more accessible than believed. In the 1950s, Alan Turing, a British polymath, wrote Computing Machinery and Intelligence. This paper explains Turing’s concepts of implementing human problem-solving tactics into a machine. Fast-forward to today where software like Chatgpt is available to everyone at the click of a button.
AI can be used in multiple forms for multiple professions. It is used to help generate concept art for new business logos, to occupy sensors strong enough to drive a car, and to create complete thoughts and stories simply with a suggestion. These functions are extremely useful and helpful but are often abused by the people using them. In schools, for example, students across the world are using the software Chatgpt to cheat and do their work for them. One in 10 teens across the US are using it to complete assignments. This is harmful for the student and the school since the students are beginning to rely on an external source to complete their assignments and the school now has to take measures to ensure the students don’t use AI to cheat. Along with schools, some workers are in danger of losing their jobs to AI. AI is effective immediately, cutting work time in half for most companies. Jobs like journalists, writers, artists, and graphic designers are at risk of getting laid off. This has already left thousands without jobs. Nearly 4,000 people lost their jobs in May of 2023 and AI is listed as a reason for the increase in layoffs.
Along with depriving people of work and creating attachment styles, we at Firebird Digital believe that the use of AI in artistic works creates a lack of authenticity. There is no originality with the use of AI. Yes, the concepts that the AI creates are of its intellect, but they lack human emotion and feeling. They lack a sense of originality with what they create.
