Meet Social Activist Chelsea Enemor

You may have seen her around the halls when school was in person or even heard of her for the amazing community work she’s dedicated her time to. Chelsea Enemor falls nothing short of an exceptional firebird who strives to inform others and speak up on important topics including school safety and reaching equality for the Black community.

From a young age, Chelsea realized that she had a natural urge to advocate for others, recalling “around 5th grade I really saw that I liked speaking up and talking about things I was passionate about.” She consistently called out rude comments by others and now uses her voice for more prominent issues. In 2018, she led the way during a march in response to the Stoneman Douglas school shooting. Chelsea also gave a speech to the community for the first time and quickly followed by finding other ways to give back. More recently, she led a social media campaign demanding accountability for blatant racism, volunteered to make bags containing essentials for homeless people in Miami, and gave a presentation in honor of Black History Month to the social reform club.

Chelsea is an advocate for equality, mentioning how “it’s important for people to be able to coexist without being rude to each other.” She hopes to reach equality for Black citizens and protect the rights of those in the LGBTQ+ community. While accepting others and being understanding is crucial, Chelsea believes it contributes to a larger understanding where being different is okay. She also hopes to educate other students and make sure they are prepared for entering the real world when they get to vote in U.S. elections. She expressed how “from a young age students should know what sides of an argument there are and what aspects make it up.” These experiences would help others navigate the real world and prevent ignorance from cultivating within society. From a young age, Chelsea has had virtuous values instilled within her which allow her to differentiate right from wrong in a media-crazed world. She prides herself on being able to do independent research and inform herself on communal issues in an effort to expand awareness and have an impact on others.

Some of Chelsea’s biggest motivators are her own family and how they push her to remain educated and seize an opportunity. Her sister is an activist as well who organized several protests over the summer. Seeing the process firsthand helped shape Chelsea’s aspirations and led her to become an involved member of the community. Her mother has also had an immense impact on her life stating, “my mom is the person who made me like this, she is tough and crazy but works so hard.” She has worked as a truck driver during overnight shifts, security officer, and is now a nurse after completing school while raising 3 kids. Chelsea feels privileged by the life her mom has created as an immigrant and feels the need to take advantage of all opportunities available to her.

Social activism is just one of Chelsea’s passions though. Outside of volunteering and staying involved with clubs at school, she is a cheerleader and has a job. The independence and control in her life are something she enjoys and craves. Chelsea even volunteers with Miami Dade Teen Court as a lawyer. The program aims to advocate and create opportunities for youth by shaping responsible citizens from a young age. She also aspires to become a lawyer in the future, with a passion for criminal law and civil rights. Chelsea states, “I want to contribute to my community in a bigger way. It’s not about the money but I want to positively change other people’s lives.”

During Chelsea’s social media campaign last summer, she said she faced some criticism from other students. Despite this, she reflects on the situation saying, “the hate comments and accounts never outweighed the positive remarks I got from people I never even met before. I didn’t care because I was still making a difference – it impacted others and inspired people to get informed.”
