After months of waiting, the 2024 Met Gala theme has finally been unveiled. “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” will be the focus of next year’s gala. Throughout the years, The Met’s Costume Institute has honored Karl Lagerfeld, celebrated America, and appreciated Japanese culture. However, next year, the institute will revisit the archives and display pieces that date back to over 400 years ago. 

The focal point of the theme is to pay tribute to nature’s beauty. Museum curator Andrew Bolton has stated, “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion.” The exhibition will heavily rely on technology to create a deeper connection with guests. Unlike past exhibitions, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” plans to use interactiveness to captivate museum visitors. The Met’s CEO and director says, “‘Sleeping Beauties’ will heighten our engagement with these masterpieces of fashion by evoking how they feel, move, sound, smell, and interact when being worn, ultimately offering a deeper appreciation of the integrity, beauty, and artistic brilliance of the works on display.”

Along with the exhibition comes fashion’s biggest night: The Met Gala. On the first Monday of May, celebrities from all over the world travel to New York City to take part in this glamorous gala. However, not just anyone can attend. Anna Wintour, Editor-In-Chief of Vogue, personally selects the stars that are to be invited. An invitation to the Met is known to be one of the hardest to receive but also the most sought-after. Most people think that celebrities go for free, but in reality, every person invited must pay $50,000 to attend. This is because the Met Gala is organized as a charity event to raise money for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Every year, the star-studded event raises millions of dollars, which helps the institute’s exhibitions, acquisitions, and capital improvements. 

Hands down, the best part of the night is sitting at home and seeing the outfits. Instagram, Twitter, and several other social media outlets are constantly updating on which celebrity has arrived and what they are wearing. For fashion lovers, the Met Gala is their Super Bowl, so it is truly so exciting seeing what everyone is wearing and the meaning behind their looks.

All in all, the 2024 Met Gala will be yet another unforgettable night in fashion. With designers like Givenchy and Schiaparelli being showcased, the prestigious event will no doubt be breathtaking. There is still much to be revealed regarding the dress code, hosts, and performances, but overall, the response to the theme has been positive. Everyone is anticipating the glamorous night, and on May 6th, we’ll all be able to see it from the comfort of our homes.
