10 Movies To Get You Ready For Halloween

Halloween is rapidly approaching, which means it’s time to revisit our favorite fall classics to get in the mood. From Ghostbusters to Halloweentown, this list highlights 10 fan favorites that will get you ready for the fall season.

Halloweentown (1998)

This first movie is definitely a blast of the past for most of us. Airing on Disney Channel in 1998, Halloweentown follows a young girl named Marnie who discovers the women in her family- including herself- are witches and that she must help her grandmother save the town. It radiates a comfortable yet spooky feeling and will surely get you in the mood for Fall.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Hocus Pocus has been receiving lots of attention lately due to its sequel’s release this past September. Though it’s always great to reimagine childhood favorites, the classics will always reign supreme. The original Hocus Pocus featured songs like “I Put a Spell on You” and “The Witches are Back,” which still linger in the back of our minds.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Arguably the most iconic movie on this list, Ghostbusters follows four friends in their pursuit of the supernatural. Not only did this movie stand out for its timeless soundtrack, but also for its amusing plot and goofy sense of humor.  This is a nostalgic movie that never fails to lift our spirits and get us in the Halloween mood.

The Addams Family (1991)

The Addams Family is iconic not only for its world-renowned costumes but also for its grim humor. This movie follows Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, and Pugsly Addams in their search for Gomez’s long-lost brother, Fester. Many sequels were made after the success of this film but none could achieve the constant shock factor that the original provided. It is definitely a movie that should be added to your watchlist this season.

Scream (1996)

Scream is the classic slasher movie and has set the stage for other fan favorites like Bride of Chucky. This star-studded film features actors like Drew Barrymore, Courtney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and Skeet Ulrich. The beauty of this movie is the anonymity of Ghostface; whenever you think you know who did it, you’re proven wrong. Wes Craven certainly knows how to keep an audience on their toes.

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

For a more family-friendly film, The Haunted Mansion is perfect for viewers of all ages. Eddie Murphy plays Jim Evers, a real estate agent taking his family on vacation. When he’s told he has to sell a creepy- and haunted- mansion before his trip, things begin to escalate. This movie features ghosts and goblins and is a must-watch this fall season.

Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Yet another star-studded movie, Hotel Transylvania takes the cake in this list for “most popular celebrities in one movie.” This film features Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, David Spade, and Steve Buscemi. Hotel Transylvania rejects the idea of monsters being scary and instead shows them in a better light, making this movie perfect for all ages.

Scooby Doo (2002)

Though released in 2002, Scooby Doo’s antics and humor are timeless. It follows Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby in their adventure in- and escape from- Spooky Island. Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Geller, Linda Cardellini, Matthew Lillard, and Neil Fanning perfectly capture the dynamic of Mystery Inc- which is what made this film so successful. This is definitely a must-watch movie for those who have yet to see it.

Knives Out (2019)

If you’re looking for a modern murder mystery, Knives Out is the movie for you. When the head of a rich but dysfunctional family is found dead in his room, it is up to detective Benoit Blanc to interview the members of this family to find out what really happened. Knives Out is perfect for Agatha Christie fans and others who enjoy thrilling mysteries. Glass Onion, another Knives Out mystery, comes out November 23, 2022, and features stars like Madelyn Cline, Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, and Kathryn Hahn.

Twitches (2005)

For this last movie, we’re taken back to the early 2000s- the peak of Disney Channel Original Movies. Twitches follows twins Alexandra and Camryn (played by Tia and Tamara Mowry) in their fight against the dark side of magic. The wardrobe and overall style of the movie are very nostalgic and embody the spirit of “Monstober.”
